Your Song – by Love Psychedelico
I love the mixture of Japanese and English in this song. Lyrics below.

kimi wa mada subete ga souzou no style
hana no you na imeeji de fly
toumei na me ni surendaa koyoi mo queen
tokuige na paazu de smile

oh sing it to me

live from new york

July 27, 2006

I Watched ‘The Best Of Saturday Night Live – Gilda Radner‘ tonight. Gilda was very talented and If you grew up when I did she was someone who is a familiar face like a family member. The DVD is very good and the special features are also very good. Not long ago I watched ‘SNL – The First Five Years‘ the SNL story on DVD. That is great. I get very nostalgic for SNL in it’s prime. I was a very young kid watching it and staying up past my bedtime (hey, it was the weekend). The humor was often above my head at the time and it was cutting edge ‘back in the day’.

I also recently watched ‘SNL – The Commercial Parodies’. A collection of SNL commercial parodies from throughout the years. Some very funny things on there for sure.

I have the book ‘Live From New York’. An interesting read.

Thank you, Robert.

easy going day

July 25, 2006

I just talked to Sara. She is singing the song ‘Easy Going Day’ from the ‘Follow That Bird’ DVD. That is her favorite this week.

I watched ‘Outfoxed’, a documentary by the great Robert Greenwald about the Fox News Network. They are the enemy. They are a right-wing media machine, designed to make Bushie look like a hero and Democrats look evil. Quite simply, they suck. Please never watch that awful network and protest as much as possible.

I managed to get Windows XP running on my macbook via Parallels (a program which lets you create a virtual machine on the mac to run Windows or Linux as an application on OS X.

Worked last night and today, so it’s been a blur of work. I am looking forward to getting laid off next year. I will then move on with my life. I am literally counting the weeks until I have been there one year. That is my goal to give myself one year and then be prepared to leave if necessary. After the new year I will be able to tell better what their workload is and what chance I have to get laid off and take the big layoff package (a big severance check (around $7000), unemployment collection and full medical benefits paid for one year.). The distance of the job is helping to really make me tired. I am sort of on hold with my life right now, just making money to gain some financial freedom.

I have been thinking back on a lot of scenes from ‘Clerks 2′. Wow, what a great movie for us ‘Clerks’ fans. Kevin Smith is to be applauded. He got it right, big time.

Anyway, I ordered some cool Shonen Knife stuff from ebay which will come next week. I saw on their website that Atsuko got married and left Japan and is now living in Los Angeles so Naoko will replace her for touring (and I assume recording also). But it makes me feel bad because they worked so well together in the studio and on stage. They fit so well together as sisters. I hope Naoko is feeling OK about this. I hope she can find some good people to record and tour with. I hope she does not loose some spirit because her sister is no longer with her.

Naoko has given me a lot with her music. I think about this a lot.

Naoko forever. Fox news must go.

Today was a strange day. I could not get much done. I just can’t describe why without getting too personal. But it has to do with my family life. Enough said.

My pal Dave Wheeler stopped by today. We hung for a while. I was at Panera for a while trying to load Windows XP onto my macbook which did not work very well. I also watched ‘Chris Rock – Never Scared’. Funny, of course. Chris never disappoints. (The DVD also had his first HBO special as a bonus feature).

I saw ‘Clerks 2‘ at the Hamilton AMC (10:30pm) showing. I loved it. It is funny and yet it has heart. It has a great message beyond the funny stuff. I was into the first ‘Clerks’ very early on.. when it was not well known. I have followed Kevin Smith since the first ‘Clerks’ and it is so nice to come full circle back to Dante and Randall. I was not crazy about ‘Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back’ and I skipped over ‘Jersey Girl’. Clerks 2 is really funny and it has a great ‘coming of age’ storyline. I think Kevin really knew that this one had to be great to live up to the Clerks saga. He really did a great job, I can’t say it enough. I look forward to seeing it again in the theatre, probably next weekend.

Before the movie I was talking to Skip on the cell phone. We talked about Glenn Gould. I will send him the ‘Glenn Gould – The Russian Journey‘ DVD..

Anyway – Clerks 2, Two MF thumbs way up.

Joel Sigel is an idiot. (but you knew that).

rainy day in chinatown

July 23, 2006

Let me catch up: Thursday and Friday were pretty typical. Just doing things around the house and then going to work on night shift. Mike finished his recording at my house on Friday and then mixed his stuff and burned cd’s for him. He was happy with the outcome. I did not charge him much because he is a cool guy and I am not doing this professionally right now so I don’t need the money. He was telling me about day trading. He is a day trader and he was offering to teach me how to do it, and show me his formula for making money. It sounded very interesting and tempting. The idea of working from home for 4 hours each morning seems very tempting indeed. I am sure there are some catches to the whole thing. I am sure it’s not as easy as it sounds. If I am not working at some point, I may try it just to see if I like it. I could do it with a minimal investment of a couple grand and just see if it works. I now have an ‘in’, so it would be worth checking out I think.

Yesterday was Saturday. The day started out with Sara calling and we made plans to see a movie. We saw ‘Monster House’ at the AMC hamilton NJ. It was ok, nothing too special. Sara liked it. After the movie we went to my house briefly and then we took the Septa R3 train out of West Trenton to Philadelphia, Chinatown. We knew it was going to rain, but we decided to go anyway. Maybe it was not the best plan but I wanted to show Sara Chinatown, and get her some stuff at the ‘Hello Kitty’ store on 10th street.

Sara watched ‘Follow That Bird’ on the macbook during the train ride there. We arrived and walked to Zen Tea House. We hung out and Sara had chocolate ice cream. I tried a pinapple bubble tea (cold). It started to pour and for some reason we decided (against our better judgement) to venture out in the rain to the Hello Kitty store. We got soaked. It was really raining hard. At one point we ducked into a Chinese grocery on Race St. until the rain let up a little. Then we left and started walking to 10th and it started pouring again. We got hit from all angles and Genie even got splashed by a puddle when a car drove by. We arrived at the Hello Kitty store very wet. Sara loved the store, there is so much stuff in there. Hello Kitty and all the other characters from that line. Literally hundreds of cute things to check out. I ended up getting her a pink Hello Kitty alarm clock (the kind with the metal bells), a Hello Kitty doll (with purple vest, purple plastic boots, angel wings, and purple hair bow), and a Hello Kitty purse/bag which matched the doll (purple decoration of the same doll with white fur around the edges). It ended up costing more than $60 but she was happy, it’s worth every penny. The stuff was nice too, not junk.

We ended up going to the train station (Market East station, 11th St.) after that because we were so wet. We did not get much of a chance to walk around Chinatown because we were wet and it was wet everywhere (puddles). We got to the station on time only to find that the train was delayed. Normally this would not be so bad, but we were wet, hungry and we just wanted to get back into some dry clothes and eat. The train was delayed about 30 or 40 minutes and we just waited on the platform. Finally it arrived and we got on the train and headed home watching ‘My Neighbor Totoro’ on the macbook. Sara hates the new english dub on this DVD. She is used to the english dub on the VHS version. Apperantley, they did a new dub for DVD and Sara knows her movies very well. She can point to every little change in the dub and say ‘They changed that line from .. to ..’. She is very perceptive and she knows all the Miyazaki movies very well.

We were almost home on the train when the train attendant came into our car and announced that the train would not make it to West Trenton because of flooding. We would have to get off at the Yardley, PA station and they were sending a shuttle to drive us to West Trenton from there. We did not get too upset, there was nothing we could do about it. We got off at Yardley and waited another half hour for a Septa bus to come and get us. It was just us, and two other people in a very cold (air conditioning was blasting) Septa bus and we chatted with the driver who told us ‘You need to help me find West Trenton, I’m from Philly’. Bear Tavern road was closed at Grand Avenue, so I showed him how to take DeCou Rd. to the station.

We finally got home, got changed and went to the ‘Tan May’ to get Chinese take out. We watched some more ‘Follow That Bird’ in the living room and then Sara and Genie left at around 10pm. It was a much longer trip to Chinatown than we expected. Sara was happy though. She loved every minute of it. It was, as Suzzy Roche once said in song, ‘A trip and a half’.

Juliana on YouTube.. dig it.

universal heartbeat

July 20, 2006

Juliana Hatfield rocks.

I was surfing on YouTube.com a lot yesterday.. watched tons of Juliana Hatfield clips. There are more on there now than a month ago. Awesome. Juliana is great. I was also watching some Guided By Voices clips on there. Then I switched to comeday for some John Candy, Bill Maher, and Henry Rollins stuff. YouTube is amazing.

I am still listening to ‘Shonen Knife – Live in Osaka’ in the car everyday. It is great. Noako is so unpretentious, she just delivers great songs, singing, playing.. Nothing is fake. Naoko is one of my favorite musicians of all time. She reaches me directly.

I was listening to Opie and Anthony (streaming on the web) yesterday morning. They had on Kevin Smith, promoting Clerks 2 which comes out Friday. They were focusing on the fact that Joel Sigel stormed out of the movie theatre and made comments during the screening because he was offended. They called Joel, and he actually got on the phone. The exchange that followed was so funny. I luckily got it recorded in .mp3 format through the computer.

Howard Stern (in his prime years) had talent. He was entertaining. Opie and Anthony have that now. They are funny, and quick. I enjoy them. But the airwaves are full of these guys that want to do the same thing and it doesn’t work at all. O+A are the only ones who can pull it off. WYSP has these other clowns that come on after them, and then later the ‘Kid Chris’ show.. and it just is not funny or entertaining. O+A make it seem easy. It’s not. They have no competition.

applemacs and voices

July 19, 2006

I brought my macbook to the apple store in Marlton, NJ yesterday. They checked it out and saw some error messages which related to my problem. My problem is that it sometimes does not wake up from sleep. After sleeping, when you open it, it just displays a blank screen and it is locked up. It requires a reboot to wake up again. Pretty lame. And they wanted to charge me $55 to look at it (unless they found a hardware issue, then it would be covered under applecare). I am not happy about this. I took my macbook with me and said ‘no thanks’. They replaced my ‘end’ key which was sticking up a bit and it still sticks up a little. They suggested that I call applecare and see if it is worth sending back to them (for the key and the sleep issue). I will call them this week.

I was listening to ‘Guided By Voices – Half Smiles Of The Decomposed’ on the way to apple, and on the way home from work. Man, it’s a great album. I have a soft spot for ‘Tour Guide At The Winston Churchill Memorial’. I just think that is the bomb. Such a well written song. In true Pollard form, he delivers on that album. It flashed me back to around 2004 when I was rocking very hard daily with GBV. I used to play along with the whole album, singing and playing acoustic guitar in my back porch area before I put carpeting down. I remember that era well, I had more time to be creative and get things done. I want to get back to that. Somehow.

I got to work late because of the apple store thing. Work was work. I just can’t get excited about it. That is just killing me inside. I am making good money, but I have no passion for my job. Is is worth the trade off? I think it is for now, but could I do that forever? I don’t think so. I need to think about the big picture, the long term plan.

This morning watched ‘Bill Maher – Victory Begins At Home’. It’s very good. I also enjoyed the Q+A section on the bonus features where he answers questions after the show. It is not as funny as his ‘Be More Cynical’ DVD, but it is well worth watching. Three cheers for Bill. He pulls no punches. He’s a smart, funny and articulate guy. He makes it look easy. We know it isn’t.

I cut the grass today, went shopping, filled up my car with gas ($50!).. all these things eat up my time, and then I go to work. I just need to keep perspective, and not let it get me down.. I will bounce back somehow.
